Member Qualifications

Member Qualifications

SHRM-GT membership is on an individual basis and is non-refundable/non-transferable. There are no corporate or institutional memberships. Applications for membership are reviewed and approved monthly by the Board of Directors. SHRM-GT recognizes the following member classifications:

Professional membership shall be limited to those individuals who are currently employed or between jobs as one or more of the following: (a) practitioners of human resource management at the exempt level for at least three years; (b) certified by SHRM or the Human Resource Certification Institute; (c) faculty members holding an assistant, associate or full professor rank in human resource management or any of its specialized functions at an accredited college or university and have at least three years of experience at this level of teaching; (d) full-time HR consultants with at least three years experience practicing in the field of human resource management; and/or (e) full-time attorneys with at least three years experience in counseling and advising clients on matters relating to the human resource profession.  “HR consultants” are individuals that meet a, b, c or e above and perform an otherwise predominantly internal HR function for other companies on an interim, project or very long-term basis while serving several such companies. HR consultants serve as an extension of, or in lieu of the HR department by offering specialized knowledge or experience in core HR functional areas, as contrasted with Business Partner Affiliates described below.  Professional members may vote and hold office in the chapter.

General Membership

Individuals employed or between jobs in non-exempt human resource positions, as well as those with less than 3 years of experience at the exempt level, and who demonstrate a bona fide interest in human resource management and the mission of the Chapter.  General members may vote and hold office in the chapter.

Business Partner Affiliate

Individuals who are engaged or between jobs in one or more of the following:  (a) Selling, marketing or promoting a product or service (excluding HR Consultants as defined herein) to Professional, General or Emeritus members or their company’s employees or (b) those individuals who do not meet the qualifications of the other classes of membership.   This will include such providers as:

  •          Benefits administrators and brokers
  •          Recruiting services and temporary agencies
  •          Outplacement services
  •          Rehabilitation services
  •          Relocation services
  •          Payroll service providers or professional employer organization services
  •          Or other similar services more characteristically tertiary to core internal HR functions

Individuals that serve these firms as an internal human resources practitioner with no direct financial interest in promoting their company’s products or services, and who meet the necessary criteria for Professional or General membership will be classified as Professional or General.

Business Partner Affiliates are not members but rather formally recognized affiliate supporters of the chapter, but have the benefit of member pricing for events.

Any individuals that meet the criteria for Professional, General or Student Membership, but also meet the criteria defined in the Business Partner Affiliates category, shall be classified as Business Partner Affiliates unless serving on the Board of Directors.

Student Membership

Individuals who are students and not employed more than 20 hours per week in a human resources position and who are (a) enrolled either as full-time or part-time students, at freshman standing or higher; (b) enrolled in the equivalent of at least six (6) credit hours; (c) enrolled in a four-year or graduate institution and/or a consortium of these or a two-year community college with a matriculation agreement between it and a four-year college or university which provides for automatic acceptance of the community college students into the four-year college or university; (d) has a stated interest in human resource management as a profession, and (e) able to provide verification of the college or university's human resources or related courses. Student members may not vote or hold office in the Chapter.

Individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of human resources or this chapter may be made emeritus members by a two-thirds majority vote of the Board.  Past Presidents of SHRM-GT automatically receive emeritus membership upon completion of their term as President regardless of which other category of membership may also apply subsequent to their term as President, and they will no longer pay dues to remain a member.  Emeritus members may vote and serve as an Officer or Director on the board of directors.
